DON'T ASK FOR SUGAR - THE COMPLETE EDITION

True love knows no borders! An unbelievable journey around the world.

✨ A true story about origins, freedom, love - and the high price of one’s own decisions. ✨

Chris grows up as the fifth of six brothers in a strict, noisy household in Stuttgart – five years in a boys’ seminary, constant school changes, harsh rules, early jobs and two apprenticeships. A life that makes him rebellious and awakens in him one desire: get out into the world. 🌍🔥

His departure begins when he lands in Sri Lanka completely unprepared – his brother Ralf has disappeared somewhere in South India. Sri Lanka throws Chris into uncertainty, Thailand into temptation, and he stumbles from one adventure to the next. 🌴✈️

Then something happens that changes everything:
In Bangkok he meets Suzanne, a beautiful, well-travelled New Zealander 🇳🇿🥝.
One week on Koh Samet becomes a quiet miracle – warmth, conversations, closeness, lightness. A love ❤️ that enters his life deeply without warning.

Months later, the two are living together in Australia – until a seer foretells Suzanne’s future and senses a dark prophecy around Chris: dark forces, sinister demons, severe trials. Shortly afterwards, Suzanne leaves him – and Chris collapses inside. 💔

He hitchhikes 12,000 km across Australia 🏜️, survives a brutal attack in Cairns, works on a diving boat – until his visa runs out.

A phone call changes everything once again:
Ralf is back in India. Chris follows him, survives severe food poisoning 🤒 and experiences an eerie night in Bhopal: classical music, a man in black, an atmosphere like from another world. 🌑🎼

Soon after, Chris is robbed on the train – passport gone, money gone, everything gone. 🎒❌
Only with Ralf’s help does he make it back to Germany and immediately flees to West Berlin to avoid mandatory military service.

There, as if by a miracle, he finds a flat and a job. His only goal: save enough to see Suzanne again. 💙
But a year at the CNC lathe brings him nowhere – while Ralf once again smuggles hashish to Frankfurt.

Chris makes a fatal decision:
He flies via East Berlin to Nepal, buys 1 kilo of hashish and 300 grams of hash oil in the Himalayas – and is arrested by the East German authorities on the return flight. ✈️🚨

The darkest chapter of his life begins:
Pre-trial detention in Keibelstraße: sleepless nights, interrogations, isolation.
Labour camp Rummelsburg: violence, hunger, harassment, a system determined to break anything that refuses to bend.
Thugs, narcissists, psychopaths, paedophiles, Stasi informants – Chris fights for bread, for a bed, for his dignity. ⚠️

When he refuses to cooperate with state security, he is thrown into the “tiger cage” – absolute darkness, hunger, cold, silence. ❄️
But he does not break.

Rumours of an amnesty circulate – no one believes them. Chris assembles asbestos lids, refuses to work again – and ends up back in the cellar hole.

Then, completely unexpectedly, they pull him out of the dungeon and place him on the Grotewohl Express, the infamous prisoner transport of the GDR. 🚆
Hours between hope and fear – and suddenly it becomes clear:
He is being expelled.

Exactly one year after his arrest – and of all days, on Friday the 13th of November 1987 – his freedom returns. 🔓✨

⭐ One single great true story – wild, raw, deep and full of heart.
An epic life journey through the 1980s: freedom, love, loss, courage, humour, pain, madness – and the unshakeable will to rise again and again.

Unique travel story that brilliantly conveys seeing the world before the days of smartphones and social media. The story is a blast to read and keeps you on your toes for the duration of the novel. Some things you can’t just make up and one of those is the experiences the author had in this book. If you’re looking for a read from a small German author this is a great option 🙂
