DON'T ASK FOR SUGAR - A TRUE STORY

About world travel, freedom, love, adventure and a new beginning.

The Complete Trilogy

The train brakes screech.

A young man punches a hole in the ceiling of an overcrowded Indian night train.

Seconds later, he jumps down from the upper sleeping berth.

The passengers stare at him.

Moments earlier, he had discovered that his backpack was gone.

Passport gone.

Money gone.

Everything gone.

Desperately, he searches among hundreds of passengers for the thief.

But this is only one stop on a journey that began years earlier in Germany.

Christoph grows up as the fifth of six brothers in Stuttgart.

From an early age, he feels drawn out into the world.

He wants to see it all.

Not someday.

Right now.

With little money and no real plan, he sets off for Asia.

What begins as an adventure changes his life forever.

In Thailand, he meets Suzanne from New Zealand.

For one week, the world seems to stand still.

Then their paths separate again.

She flies to Australia.

He returns to Germany.

Four months later, Christoph has earned enough money and follows her to Australia.

For the first time, life seems to be heading in the right direction.

Then they hear about a fortune teller known for her remarkably accurate predictions.

What they hear sounds strange at first.

Suzanne will soon be living far to the south.

For Christoph, fate has prepared a difficult test.

A few days later, Suzanne is offered the chance to fly to New Zealand for a fraction of the normal price.

She boards the plane.

Christoph is left behind.

And the test begins.

To take his mind off things, he travels around Australia, works on a dive boat, and survives on casual jobs.

Shortly before his visa expires, he learns that his brother Ralf is back in India.

Christoph immediately knows what that means.

Yet he boards a plane anyway.

India greets him with chaos, heat, and illness.

After a severe case of food poisoning in Kerala, he finds himself on that very night train to Nepal with his brother.

The train on which he is robbed.

The train on which everything suddenly disappears.

His brother lends him money.

Enough to get him back to New Delhi on his own.

Back in Germany, Christoph works as a CNC machinist in West Berlin.

For an entire year, he saves money for one goal:

To see Suzanne again.

But the money is never enough.

Eventually, he makes a decision that will change his life forever.

A decision that takes him through East Berlin and into the Himalayas.

And ultimately behind the walls of a prison in East Germany.

Interrogations.

Pre-trial detention.

Forced labour.

Isolation.

The infamous Tiger Cage of Rummelsburg.

A place where the State Security tried to break the will of its prisoners.

But not everyone can be broken.

DON’T ASK FOR SUGAR is the true story of a young man in search of freedom.

A story of world travel and downfall.

Of love and loss.

Of brothers, adventure, and bad decisions.

And of the remarkable ability to rise again, even after the darkest chapters of life.

This edition contains the complete trilogy:

• How It All Begins
• Nothing Lasts Forever
• Contrarian Thinking

Including numerous original photographs from that period.

For readers who have ever wondered how a single decision can change an entire life.

Bernhard Christoph Lichtinger writes books drawn from lived experience, from setbacks, detours, new beginnings and encounters that never needed to be invented. His stories begin where real life leaves its mark.

Unique travel story that brilliantly conveys seeing the world before the days of smartphones and social media. The story is a blast to read and keeps you on your toes for the duration of the novel. Some things you can’t just make up and one of those is the experiences the author had in this book. If you’re looking for a read from a small German author this is a great option 🙂
